The India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgraded its weather warning on Wednesday as a low-pressure system over the central Bay of Bengal rapidly intensified into a deep depression. The system is expected to develop into a severe cyclonic storm by Friday evening, with landfall likely between Puri and Visakhapatnam.
Expected Impact
Wind speeds could reach 120-140 km/h near the center at the time of landfall, accompanied by heavy to very heavy rainfall across coastal districts. Storm surge of up to 1.5 meters is anticipated in low-lying areas.
The National Disaster Response Force has pre-positioned 25 teams across the two states. Odisha's government ordered the evacuation of residents from vulnerable coastal settlements, with over 200 relief shelters activated.
"We are taking no chances. Lessons from previous cyclones have shown that early evacuation saves lives," said Odisha's Special Relief Commissioner.
Preparedness Measures
- Fishermen advised not to venture into the Bay of Bengal until April 18
- All ports along the east coast placed on high alert
- Railways and airlines monitoring situation for potential service disruptions
- Army and Navy units placed on standby for relief operations
Climate scientists note that the frequency of pre-monsoon cyclones has increased in recent years, a pattern consistent with warming sea surface temperatures in the Indian Ocean basin. The IMD will issue its next bulletin at 11:30 PM IST.
