India, a country where nearly 40 percent of the population is vegetarian, might seem like the last place that needs a plant-based food revolution. But a new wave of startups is proving that the market for innovative plant-based products extends far beyond traditional vegetarian cuisine — and is growing explosively.
The New Players
Companies like Imagine Meats (co-founded by actors Genelia and Riteish Deshmukh), Blue Tribe Foods, and Shaka Harry have introduced products that mimic chicken keema, mutton seekh kebabs, and even biryani — all made entirely from plants. The products target non-vegetarian consumers interested in reducing meat consumption for health or environmental reasons.
Sales data tells the story: India's plant-based meat market grew 78 percent in FY26 to ₹3,400 crore. Plant-based dairy alternatives, led by oat and almond milk, surpassed ₹2,000 crore. The combined market is projected to reach $2 billion by 2028.
Restaurant Revolution
Major restaurant chains including McDonald's India, Burger King, and Starbucks have introduced plant-based menu sections. Cloud kitchen brands specializing exclusively in plant-based cuisine have proliferated in metros.
"India's food culture has always been innovative. We're not replacing tradition — we're adding to it. A grandmother's dal recipe and a plant-based kebab can coexist happily on the same table," said Sohil Wazir of Blue Tribe Foods.
