India's mental health crisis — one psychiatrist for every 100,000 people, compared to the WHO recommendation of one per 10,000 — is being addressed through innovative approaches that leverage technology and community to fill the gap left by a shortage of professionals.
Digital Mental Health
Platforms like Amaha, YourDOST, and Wysa have collectively served over 15 million Indians seeking mental health support. These services range from AI-powered chatbots that provide cognitive behavioral therapy exercises to video consultations with licensed therapists at a fraction of traditional fees.
Wysa, an Indian AI therapy chatbot, has been particularly successful, with clinical studies showing its interventions reduce symptoms of depression by 31 percent on average. The platform is now used in 30 countries and has been endorsed by the UK's National Health Service.
Corporate Wellness Programs
Indian companies are investing more in employee mental health than ever before. A NASSCOM survey found that 72 percent of large Indian companies now offer mental health benefits, up from 23 percent in 2020. Progressive firms offer therapy subsidies, mental health days, and peer support programs.
"The stigma hasn't disappeared, but it has cracked. When a CEO publicly talks about their therapy journey, it gives permission to an entire organization to seek help," said Dr. Samir Parikh, psychiatrist at Fortis Healthcare.
