The Indian fashion industry, the world's second largest by volume, is undergoing a sustainability transformation driven by consumer demand, regulatory pressure, and a new generation of designers who refuse to compromise on ethics. Here are the brands leading the charge in 2026.
The Pioneers
No Nasties, India's first 100 percent organic and Fairtrade fashion brand, has grown from a small Goa-based operation to a national label with 15 stores. Every garment carries full supply chain transparency — customers can trace the cotton from field to finished product via QR codes on clothing tags.
Doodlage, which creates designer clothing entirely from textile waste, has won international recognition including the Global Change Award from H&M Foundation. Their upcycled collections rival conventional fashion brands in aesthetics while diverting tons of fabric from landfills.

"Sustainable fashion in India isn't about copying Western models. Our textile traditions are inherently sustainable — we just need to rediscover and modernize them," said designer Anita Dongre, whose label has committed to being carbon-neutral by 2027.
Consumer surveys show that 55 percent of Indian shoppers under 35 are willing to pay a 15-20 percent premium for sustainably produced clothing, up from 28 percent three years ago. The market is finally meeting the moment.
