Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis jointly announced on Tuesday that a new Indian Grand Prix will join the F1 calendar from the 2027 season. The race will be held at a purpose-built 5.4-kilometer circuit near Khopoli, approximately 80 kilometers from Mumbai.

The New Circuit

Designed by renowned circuit architect Hermann Tilke in collaboration with an Indian firm, the track features 16 turns, significant elevation changes — unusual for an Indian circuit — and a 1.2-kilometer start-finish straight designed to produce dramatic overtaking opportunities. Construction begins in September 2026.

The circuit complex will include a 60,000-seat main grandstand, permanent hospitality suites, and an integrated entertainment district. The venue is designed to host MotoGP and other international motorsport events alongside the F1 race.

Why Now?

India's previous F1 venture at the Buddh International Circuit near Delhi lasted only three years (2011-2013) before collapsing due to tax disputes and governance issues. The new deal addresses these problems through a dedicated special economic zone designation and state government backing.

"India is the world's most exciting growth market, and F1 must be present here. The enthusiasm of Indian fans and the country's economic trajectory make this a natural partnership," Domenicali said.

The deal is reportedly worth over $400 million over 10 years, funded by a combination of state investment and private capital. Ticket prices will be benchmarked against Singapore and Abu Dhabi, though a portion of seats will be offered at accessible price points.
