Neeraj Chopra continued his superb early-season form with a personal best throw of 91.38 meters at the Diamond League meeting in Doha on Friday. The effort, which came in the fourth round of competition, surpasses his previous best of 89.94 meters and places him among the all-time greats of the event.
The Competition
Chopra's throw came in a high-quality field that included Germany's Julian Weber, who won the competition with 92.07 meters, and Czech Republic's Jakub Vadlejch, who finished third at 88.12 meters. The Doha conditions — warm, still air at the state-of-the-art Khalifa International Stadium — proved ideal for big throws.
The Indian champion opened with a solid 86.45 meters before progressively improving through the rounds. His fourth-round effort of 91.38 meters drew a massive cheer from Indian fans in the stands and immediately set social media alight.
Significance of the Mark
The throw confirms Chopra's status as a genuine contender for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where he will attempt an unprecedented third consecutive Olympic medal. Only four javelin throwers in history have exceeded 91 meters multiple times in their careers.
"I knew 91 was in me. Tonight the body cooperated, the technique felt perfect at release, and the javelin just flew. Now the target is 92 and beyond," Chopra said in a post-event interview.
Chopra's next competition is the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland on June 10, where he will look to build on this breakthrough performance heading into the European circuit.
