India needed just four sessions on days three and four to wrap up a commanding innings-and-47-run victory over England in the opening Test at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium. Jasprit Bumrah produced one of the finest fast bowling spells seen in Indian conditions, claiming 7/42 as England's batting crumbled.
Bumrah's Masterclass
Operating with the new ball in overcast conditions on day four, Bumrah was virtually unplayable. His ability to generate lateral movement off the surface at pace left England's top order groping at shadows. He removed both openers in his first spell and returned after lunch to clean up the middle order.
Rohit Sharma's first-innings 186, which anchored India's massive total of 524, proved the decisive contribution. The pitch, which offered assistance to seamers throughout, was challenging for batsmen from both sides, but India's technique against the moving ball was markedly superior.
Scorecard Summary
- India: 524 all out (Rohit 186, Pant 78, Anderson 3/102)
- England 1st innings: 231 all out (Root 67, Bumrah 3/61)
- England 2nd innings: 246 all out (Brook 82, Bumrah 7/42)
"Bumrah in these conditions is the most challenging proposition in world cricket. He makes the ball talk in ways that seem to defy physics," said England head coach Brendon McCullum.
The second Test begins in Bengaluru next Thursday. India lead the five-match series 1-0 and are heavy favorites to secure the Border-Gavaskar-style dominance they've shown at home for over a decade.
