The long-anticipated rebranding of Disney+ Hotstar to Jio Cinema Premium went live on Monday, marking the final step in the merger of India's two largest streaming platforms. Existing Disney+ Hotstar subscribers have been automatically migrated to the new platform with no changes to their plans.
What Changes
The merged platform combines Hotstar's massive library of Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar content with Jio Cinema's sports rights, HBO programming, and Indian original content. At over 100,000 hours of programming across 12 languages, it is now the largest streaming library available in India.
Pricing tiers have been restructured. The base ad-supported plan remains free. A new Premium plan at ₹299/month includes ad-free viewing, 4K content, and simultaneous streaming on four devices. The most significant change is the bundling of live sports, including IPL and English Premier League, into the Premium tier.
Market Impact
The merged entity claims over 180 million monthly active users, dwarfing Netflix India's estimated 35 million and Amazon Prime Video's 55 million. The scale advantage in content licensing and advertising revenue could prove decisive in the streaming wars.
"This merger creates a streaming behemoth that no competitor can ignore. The question now is whether quality can keep pace with quantity," said media analyst Mihir Shah of Media Partners Asia.
Netflix, Amazon, and Apple TV+ are expected to respond with increased Indian content investments. Sony's own streaming ambitions in India remain uncertain following the collapse of its proposed merger with Zee Entertainment.
