The 99th Academy Awards nominations have been announced, and the race for Hollywood's top honors is wide open. This year's slate is notably diverse, with international films making strong showings and several categories featuring intense three-way battles.
Best Picture
Ten films have been nominated for Best Picture, led by the critically acclaimed "The Infinite Garden," a meditative sci-fi drama that has dominated the awards circuit. Also nominated are "American Midnight," a period drama about the 1920s labor movement, and "Rivers of Ash," a sweeping Indian-British co-production that could make history as the first India-set film to win the top prize.
"The Brutalist," which premiered to standing ovations at Venice, rounds out the frontrunners. The remaining nominees span genres from comedy to documentary-fiction hybrids.
Key Nominations
- Best Director: The category features two women for the first time — Greta Gerwig and Chloé Zhao
- Best Actor: A hotly contested race between three previous winners
- Best International Film: India's "All We Imagine as Light 2" earned a historic nomination
"This is the most genuinely international Oscar race in memory. The old boundaries between Hollywood and world cinema are dissolving," said awards journalist Kyle Buchanan of the New York Times.
The ceremony will be held on March 2, 2027, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, hosted by comedian Hasan Minhaj. Early odds favor "The Infinite Garden" for Best Picture, but the ranked-choice voting system means any of the top five contenders could prevail on Oscar night.
